Chapter Thirteen

The food at the Teaberry Station Pub & Grill had been served buffet style for the couples party. Courtney had managed to grab something before speaking with more people. She thought Austin had managed to eat something also. The plan was to open the presents at the end of the party. That way, anyone who needed to leave or wanted to skip the event could. But, in the meantime, both Austin and Courtney wanted to spend time with their guests.

Courtney glanced around the room to make sure everyone looked comfortable. For the most part, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Courtney turned and saw her maid of honor working her way toward Courtney. Although most of her current friends were from work, Madison and Courtney had gone to school together. They had taken most of their math classes together. Unlike most people in school, Madison had seemed to understand Courtney.

“Girl, you sure know how to throw a party,” Madison said with a smile.

“I think everyone looks like they’re having a good time,” Courtney said. “How about you? How are you holding up?”

“Don’t worry about me, this is your night. Besides, I’m just happy that you aren’t forcing me to wear an ugly dress tomorrow.” Madison grinned at Courtney.

“No matter how ugly the dress, it would somehow still look good on you,” Courtney said shaking her head.

“We have a great system worked out to expedite the gift opening. Your mom and I will be ready, and we got another volunteer to help speed it up. Your cousin’s wife, Penny Nelson, is going to help. She seems real nice. We’ll be good to go when you are.” Madison gave her friend a thumbs-up before joining another group of people.

Courtney was surprised when the photographer suddenly appeared and snapped several pictures of her. She smiled for the pictures and then looked for Austin. She spotted him across the room and started working her way toward him. She saw someone sitting alone at a table and changed course. It was Chris Hill. Chris had been ahead of her in school. Courtney remembered Chris but her name had been Olsen then. Though, Courtney thought as she approached the table, the Chris she saw now wasn’t anything like the girl she remembered. Instead of a smiling young girl, this woman looked defeated.

“Are you okay?” Courtney asked.

Chris startled and looked up at Courtney. Courtney could tell the smile Chris gave her was forced. “Yes, of course. Lovely party.”

“Can I get you anything?” Courtney asked.

“No, I’m fine. Thank you.” Chris twisted the napkin in her hand.

Courtney glanced across the room and saw Derek Hill put his arm around another woman as they ducked out of the room together. “Okay, well let me know.” Courtney smiled at Chris and headed toward Austin again.

Jan White watched the people in the room as she sat at her table drinking wine. The bride and groom were working the room, talking with people. Jan saw Brandy across the room ignoring her husband, Keith.
